Thanks Pete. In the circumstances there wasn't much else we could have done! You'd probably have done the same - and I've had several messages from other stylists & photographers recounting similar stories. It's not uncommon.

The respect people have for photographers and photography has been on a steady decline for years. It only seems so bad now because of how far our profession has fallen in peoples esteem.
At least bank managers and estate agents register on peoples radar!

It is a difficult thing to do in today's recession but sometimes one simply has to know when to walk away from a certain type of client or subject

Well done Tony. :-)

Well then shame on the retailers for not heeding the clients budget. If a potential client offers full project requirements and includes budget then it should be a retailers dream.

Anyway, good to connect and interact Anthony!

Colin, you are exactly right. But I think in this case the suppliers were made fully aware of the quality/size of kitchen being sought, and the approximate budget available. In at least one case a supplier gave assurances that a full-spec kitchen could be provided within budget, but his quotation exceeded this comfortably... The customers were completely open about their requirements, expectations and budget - suppliers failed to heed this, and/or were unrealistic about their ability to supply a product that fitted the bill.
After some delay I expect to be able to have a feature on this kitchen published in one of the more successful UK home interest glossies this summer - watch this space!
Thanks for your contribution - Anthony

Interesting article Anthony. I think one interesting point you make in the article is that a few local dealers visited, produced designs and quotes, but were dismissed because their prices were way off. The local retailers spent valuable time in visiting, designing and quoting for the job and that itself costs them money. So to not get the job based on price means that the fit between retailer and customer didn't match (high end kitchen company pricing for a low end job for example) or budget was never discussed. I know it's a tricky topic to discuss but budget is fundamentally important for both customer and retailer. The retailer needs to know so they can produce a design and spec to suit. And the customer needs to disclose it so they don't waste time engaging with retailers who cannot produce the kitchen within budget.

Indeed Paul, agreed. I mean, it's not exactly a grime-coated factory, is it... I find the combo of exposed beams, shiny bolt heads, and smart decor, both appealing and stimulating. It seems central to the idea of commissioning this sort of home, and I don't understand why anyone would wish to conceal it and make the whole effect more bland, less dramatically different.

The style of a Huf Haus reminds me of residential areas in Australia, personally I really like the industrial look and would not look to cover it as some people choose to do.

Simon, that's exactly my view of Huf: they are so good, and they have sufficient flexibility of design options, that it represents hardly any compromise at all over a fully bespoke house through an architect. It's a pity that to so many, especially the deeply conservative, hidebound types to be found on planning committees, a Huf Haus seems a bit scarily different. These people will allow a numbingly boring dormer bungalow, or a ghastly sprawl of cliche-ridden estate homes from a developer, but a Huf Haus raises eyebrows...

I'm in complete agreement about the modern house kits and also, in particular, Huf Haus. The thought of having a reasonably modest piece of land and having a semi-bespoke structure delivered and put together seems like a perfect solution. It's almost in between building your own home from scratch and renovating a current property. Both seem messy but there is a real clinical edge to these kits.

Hello Brett, glad you appreciated it. Yes, it's a few years since we were in touch, but perhaps we can co-operate over some new project. As I wrote above, I'd go back tomorrow! Very nice at this time of year, cool nights and warm days... I was talking this morning with a friend who visits Marrakech two or three times a year on business, made me feel wistful. Do contact me if there are any interesting possibilities.
